Bespoke Oxford-Style White Picket Fence

A white picket fence is the quintessential symbol of a classic and welcoming home. The Oxford-style picket fence, with its elegant and timeless design, is particularly popular for its simplicity and charm. In this blog post, we'll show how we designed and constructed a lovely fence.

Purpose & Layout

For this location, we needed a fence and gate around the entire property, designed with this classic look.

Design Phase

The project began with a comprehensive design phase, tailored to the client's specific needs and preferences:

Understanding the Purpose and Layout

  • Purpose: The primary purposes were to provide a safe space for children and pets while enhancing the property's visual appeal.

  • Layout: We conducted a thorough survey of the property to mark out the fence line, identifying key points such as gate locations, corners, and any existing obstacles like trees or pathways.

  1. Selecting the Materials

    • Wood Type: We selected high-quality wood for its durability and natural resistance to rot, ensuring a long-lasting fence.

    • Pickets and Posts: The design featured pointed pickets in keeping with the traditional Oxford style. The posts were chosen for their strength and stability.

  2. Detail Planning

    • Picket Spacing and Height: We opted for close spacing between pickets for a more traditional look, and the fence height was set to 4 feet, providing a balance of privacy and openness. All local regulations were adhered to.

Installation Process

Equipped with a detailed plan, our skilled team proceeded with the installation:

  1. Marking the Fence Line

    • We used string and stakes to outline the precise location of the fence, ensuring a straight and even installation.

  2. Digging Post Holes

    • Our team used a post hole digger to create holes at least 2 feet deep, spaced 6-8 feet apart for optimal stability.

  3. Setting the Posts

    • Gravel was placed at the bottom of each hole for drainage. Posts were positioned, leveled, and set with concrete, which was left to cure for 24 hours.

  4. Attaching the Rails

    • Horizontal rails were attached between the posts, ensuring they were level and evenly spaced for structural integrity.

  5. Installing the Pickets

    • The pickets were meticulously attached to the rails with consistent spacing, maintaining the classic Oxford look.

  6. Painting the Fence

    • To achieve the iconic white finish, we applied a primer followed by two coats of high-quality paint, protecting the wood and enhancing its appearance.

  7. Final Touches

    • We installed a pedestrian gate that swung freely and latched securely and a driveway gate to close behind any vehicles. Later, we came back and put a custom made house number sign on the gate, free of charge!
